On this day, January 10, in 1901 (108 years ago), a colossal gusher of crude oil was found while drilling at Spindletop Hill, near Beaumont Texas signifying the start of the United States oil industry. The gusher was discovered at a depth of more than 1,000 feet and flowed at an initial rate of 100,000 barrels a day, and took 9 days to cap. Crude oil became the world's first trillion dollar industry.
Also on this day, January 10, in 1946 (63 years ago), the first General Assembly of the United Nations took place. At the time, the U.N. was comprised of 51 nations. The assembly took place at Westminster Central Hall in London, England.
