On This Day...

On this day, March 9, in 1959 (50 years ago), the first Barbie doll made its debut. Barbie made her debut at the American toy fair in New York City. Produced by Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel, Inc., the first Barbie doll stood 11 inches tall and was the first doll with adult features for children. Handler noticed that her daughter had grown bored with her baby dolls and had more fun playing make believe with paper dolls modeled after women. She designed a doll and named it after her daughter, Barbara, and Barbie was born!
